JUST LIKE: CLOCKWORK EMPIRES COMING TO EARLY ACCESS
It’s a funny old world when losing $20 million is a cause for moderate rejoicing. But then $20 million’s worth of bleeding is a hell of a lot better than $146 million. I speak, of course, of the never ending saga (going-on soap opera) that is AMD’s fortunes. Thing is, we are all of us much better off if AMD remains in the game and at the very least things are looking up. So, its worth tuning in for this latest episode. Meanwhile, it looks like the range and choice of LCD panels for PC monitors might just be ready to explode, Nvidia adds remote access to its game streaming tech and small-form factor bricks with proper gaming grunt are popping up. Hurrah and huzzah. … [visit site to read more]

SLADE TO MEASURE: OUTCAST HD FOOTAGE
The Outcast HD Kickstarter campaign is aiming high. I know plenty of people who remember the open world adventure fondly but $600,000 is a huge amount to ask for. With just less than two weeks to go, there’s less than $250,000 in pledges and it’s hard not to think that the most recent update video might have helped if it had been part of the pitch page from the beginning. Although still using some old assets, specifically for “the characters, animations and effects”, you’ll find the first footage of the recreated HD environments below. Along with the video, there’s a voiceover giving an overview of the game for those who may not have played it or may not remember what made it so special. Best of all, you can hear the orchestral score, which contains some of my favourite music ever written for a game. … [visit site to read more]

HANDS ON: WAR THUNDER GROUND FORCES CLOSED BETA
So, here’s a quick refresher: World of Tanks had tanks and War Thunder had planes, and then World of Warplanes had planes so now War Thunder Ground Forces, currently in closed beta, has both tanks and planes fighting in the same world. I feel like these free-to-play World War II MMOs are in an arms race, and soon they’ll be adding submarines and blimps and, I dunno, flying saucers. Anyway, if you’re wondering if Gaijin Entertainment is as good with tanks as they are with planes, I just spent a couple days rolling around in the Ground Forces beta to find out. Let’s tank a look, he said, vowing it would be his only tank pun. … [visit site to read more]

TURN-BASED END TIMES: HUMAN EXTINCTION SIMULATOR
An email landed earlier this week to inform me of the existence of the Human Extinction Simulator. I expected a disease simulator along the lines of Plague Inc so imagine my surprise when tiny spaceships filled my screen, engaged in turn-based combat. HES has one of the smartest concepts for tactical space biffing that I can remember seeing. Having encountered a hostile and overwhelmingly powerful alien species, humanity has developed the Halting Extraterrestrials Strategy program to train officers. The name doesn’t stick. Recruits call this program the Human Extinction Simulator due to the extensive and often catastrophic scenarios depicted. While most find this amusing, some fear that it might be the actual name of the program. Oh boy. … [visit site to read more]

DARK SOULS II VS PC: ON CHEATERS, LACK OF MOD SUPPORT
At what price progress? We level mountains and fill chasms to make journeys easier, drag down islands floating in the sky because they look weird, and fence off the boundaries of the world because we feel uncomfortable in places where geometry, geography, and physics break down. Life becomes easier but less interesting, and we all suffer for it. Keep Mineland weird. Having ironed out some of the oddities of Minecraft‘s world generator over the years, Mojang is bringing them back in a way. Version 1.8 will expose a few of the generator’s inner workings, with sliders and buttons that’ll let players fiddle with such cryptic settings as “coordinate scale” and “biome scale offset.” Sure, you could simply use it to toss in a few more caverns, or you could go all out and re-enact Waterworld. … [visit site to read more]

The next installment in the COD line of games has been announced this friday, and yesterday we had some hands on with it. Being rather controversial, this installment takes place in WW3, which just ended 2 years ago. We asked the lead designer on this controversial decision, on which he said "The series is simply going back to its roots, to MW3". The game is slated for an early 2028 release.

LARGE WEAPONS CACHE FOUND AFTER STANDOFF

A storehouse of handguns and assault weapons was found in a Brisbane home after a two-day standoff with police. Authorities say eight pro-China rebels were taken into custody. The South Australian Federation was once again forced to bring in private contractors to help quell the unrest.
